Dear younger sibling that i wish i had,

after a years worth of writing here is two things that i struggled with the most: procrastination and flow of the paper (or transitions). First of all procrastination is the worst thing ever. Work on things before the night before the paper is due and trust me you will be much happier. Secondly flow is really hard for me, write down your thesis and make sure you stick with it. Try not to go off course of your thesis and confuse the reader. Also transitions are key make the last sentence of your paragraph basically an introduction to the next paragraph. These to pointers will help you out a lot even though procrastination is hard to beat.

When I am looking at a poster for a movie I would expect to see the main characters that are throughout the film. Those characters being dressed in the same attire that they wear throughout the film as well as props that may go along with those particular costumes or characters. Another thing I would expect to see is obviously the title of the movie and when it was coming to theaters. The background of the characters should match the title or what the characters are usually surrounded by in the film. The poster should be appealing to the eye and make you want to see the film.

Perhap you could do a crowded school yard with a lot of students going on with their life and laughing, bussling and then one boy who would be front and center just standing there by himself looking extremely lonely. Everyone has found and has their group of friends except him

If you had to pick a color that represented the play you’ve chosen for this seq. project, what would it be?  Why?  Could you use that color in any way for your project?

I would have to choose the color yellow because the play is really about the boy adjusting to school and when i think of school i think of yellow bus. I understand that yellow is usually a happy color that relates to sunshine and everything and for most of the story the kid isnt all that happy but in the end he becomes thankful for the move and adjusts well. So i think that the end is really all that matters because it ends good. I think i could really use yellow for a backgroud color and show the relation with buses as a border or something lik that.

Metaphor Class Work April 21, 2009

Metaphor- “as you lose the argument in a cable car. Hanging above as the canyon comes between”

Tenor-canyon

Vehicle- A big problem coming between two people

Associated Realm- facing a problem with no way around it

Vehicle Associations-scary, frustrating, un-solvable, sad

Meanings Highlighted- You are hanging above a problem with a person with no choice but to face it and now way around it

Meanings Masked- Hard problems being faced are massive and deep as well as undeniable

1.      Consider the significance of the associations

The association between a problem and a canyon is quite interesting. You encounter problems everyday in yet you really don’t think of them as a whole. Problems are extremely similar to canyons. They are usually quite big and you can try to ignore it as long as possible but in the end you are just going to face it and that will be all you can see. Sometimes that problem is so deep that you will never be able to get over the problem, similar to a canyon which I am sure you can never forget. The metaphor says you are hanging above it as if you have nothing else to think of except what is below you.

2.      Consider how the effective it is – is there a better metaphor?

Problems could be compared to many things but all in all I feel that this is a very good metaphor. There are so many angles you can think of where it is coming from. There are more than just a few ways you can relate problems that you are facing to canyons. Especially how it is about two people and a canyon is coming between them. I think that a lot of people can relate to this feeling how there is an empty space between you and a person that you simply can’t fill.

I never knew that everything was falling through
That everyone I knew was waiting on a cue”

As you lose the argument in a cable car
Hanging above as the canyon comes between”

The line that states everyone was waiting on a cue, simply means that everyone in his life is absent in his life. He waits for their response, action, or anything to show that they care but they show nothing. Everyone needs to be told what to do and they cant have their own mind. Everyone waits to see what other people are doing, and telling them what to do, before they even do it. The line tells you that he needs people to start acting on their own instead of relying on others.

Hanging above as a canyon comes between. A deep hole comes in between two people, in the middle of an argument you begin to see a distance and no way to resolve it. There is no way around this problem it is massive and filled with water. Your hanging above this problem with nothing else to think of except whats below you. You have to face the problem and it isnt going to be easy.

I am a dog.

Some relationships between me and a dog would be playful, loyal, happy, youth, trustworthy, security, love, compassionate, warm.

Play Review Thought Entry April 9, 2009

The play that I am choosing to critique had the students Mo, Tatiana, Kevin and Megan(?). Their play was about a girl who witnessed her parents split and then had to live a life without a mother. It was a good topic and different from most of the ideas but there was a couple of things off about the play. First thing I noticed was that some of the people in the play did not memorize their lines very well and was looking down at script on the table a lot. This was noticeable and makes the play seem less real as well as disappoints the other students who have their lines memorized and did very well. Second of all there was not much character development. It would have been nice to see how not having a mom affected the young girl besides just making her sad. I feel as if they could have carried the topic a little longer to show the long time effects of not having a mother, maybe on her wedding day with no one to fluff her veil. Just a few thoughts…

I think an interesting topic for a play would be the effect of neglection and abuse it has on a child. Merrick, besides his deformities grew up to be a loving and optimistic person, where as you here statistics about how if you grow up being abused you will most likely become an abuser yourself. Those are just some intial thoughts, but on a much broader topic just the effects that your parents have over your life. Lucy had to constantly deal with hearing her parents fighting and her mom constantly taking her angry out oh her. When i was reading the book i was constantly thinking about how my mom would handle the situation versus lucy’s mom because it seemed like lucy’s mom never felt sorry for what her daughter had to go through. Yet lucy was never asking “why me” or feeling bad for herself. Both books you see cases where the children still came out as happy adults even though their parents really messed up while raising them.

When I picture Merrick’s life and all the struggles he had to face I only imagine him listening to incredibly depressing songs. In the beginning of his life when all he knew was being in a freak show, with everyone staring at him and constantly making him feel like a complete outcast when he couldn’t even be stand to seen by his family was the last thing he needed. During this period of his life I would have to say that the song he would probably be listening to would be Color Blind by Counting Crows… “I am colorblind, coffee black and egg white. Pull me out from inside. I am ready, I am ready..I am taffy stuck and tongue tied, stutter shook and up tight. Pull me out from inside. I am ready, I am ready, I am fine. I am covered in skin; no one gets to come in.”

When Merrick is stuck between his thoughts between what a home is and all the different people not being able to look him in his own home I would imagine him listening to Imogen Heap “Hide and Seek”. “What did you say? That you only meant well? Well of course you did. What did you say? That it’s all for the best? Of course it is. What did you say? That this is just what we need? Well you decided this.. Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth. Mid sweet talk, news paper cut outs. Speak no feeling no I don’t believe you. You don’t care a bit..” I feel like these lyrics are perfect for what he could be going through, with all the people believing they know what is best for him.

Sequence 2 Writer’s Memo March 20, 2009

From my writing I learned a lot about jealousy and its effects on a person. The thing that I found most interesting was that you can start having feelings of jealousy as young as six months. This detail was extremely mind boggling since that  age was shockingly low. When writing my paper I found it hard to break out of the five paragraph form of writing and do something more creative. I am so use to writing papers in that particular form that it is getting hard for me to break out of. The thing I liked best about my writing is that it makes you look at jealousy in a different way and realize how much it effects your life, as well as Erik’s life. After the reader has read my piece I hope that he/she will take a look at their life and realize all the times jealousy has really ruined a situation.
