Metaphor- “as you lose the argument in a cable car. Hanging above as the canyon comes between”

Tenor-canyon

Vehicle- A big problem coming between two people

Associated Realm- facing a problem with no way around it

Vehicle Associations-scary, frustrating, un-solvable, sad

Meanings Highlighted- You are hanging above a problem with a person with no choice but to face it and now way around it

Meanings Masked- Hard problems being faced are massive and deep as well as undeniable

1.      Consider the significance of the associations

The association between a problem and a canyon is quite interesting. You encounter problems everyday in yet you really don’t think of them as a whole. Problems are extremely similar to canyons. They are usually quite big and you can try to ignore it as long as possible but in the end you are just going to face it and that will be all you can see. Sometimes that problem is so deep that you will never be able to get over the problem, similar to a canyon which I am sure you can never forget. The metaphor says you are hanging above it as if you have nothing else to think of except what is below you.

2.      Consider how the effective it is – is there a better metaphor?

Problems could be compared to many things but all in all I feel that this is a very good metaphor. There are so many angles you can think of where it is coming from. There are more than just a few ways you can relate problems that you are facing to canyons. Especially how it is about two people and a canyon is coming between them. I think that a lot of people can relate to this feeling how there is an empty space between you and a person that you simply can’t fill.
